Stonewall Inn visit

Mary and Peter in front of the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, NYC

Before flying out of NYC yesterday, got brunch in the city right next to the Stonewall Inn, where the American gay-rights movement took off during the Stonewall riots of 1969.  It was pretty incredible to be there.

Additionally, Obama used the rhetorical trio “through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall…” in his Inaugural Address earlier this year, referring to the first women’s rights convention in upstate New York in 1848, the city in Alabama where peaceful civil rights marchers were attacked by police in 1965, and of course the Greenwich Village bar, above, where defiant resistance to similar police brutality prompted the modern gay-rights movement.
