Very sad day indeed. Mr. Martin’s tweets after the verdict honor his son’s memory and reveal something central about this family: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/13/trayvon-martin-father-tweets_n_3593146.html Love never ends, and it will prevail in the end.

Now, at the risk of moving from the deeply serious & important to the significantly less so, I’ll offer a friendly amendment… and only because I know you to be a culturally sensitive person. “America” does not equal “the United States.” As more than one patient of mine (from Peru, Chile, Argentina, Colombia) has remarked, they, too, are Americans. In fact, there’s an argument that our tendency to abscond with the hemispheric name and apply it exclusively to our own country is just a tad grandiose. In this case, shame on *the United States* for creating and sustaining a culture that allows this to happen… not that racism isn’t a huge problem in Central and South America, too.
