After just posting about the wonderful visit I had to Tripoli only a few weeks ago, I learned of the terrible bombing that occurred there today, which resulted in 42 fatalities (so far) and over 500 people wounded. My heart goes out to the people of Terablos. Alhamdolilleh my close friends from Tripoli, Hiba and Karim (and their families) were not hurt.
Unfortunately, many people suspect that these two bombings were retaliation for the huge bombings in South Beirut (Dahiye) last week. The area south of Beirut is one of the country’s largest Hezbollah (Shi’a) strongholds, whereas Tripoli is the country’s Salafist (Sunni) heartland. Much as no one wants to admit it, everyone fears that Lebanon is teetering on the verge of civil war. Without a doubt, the country has been profoundly affected by the ongoing violence in Syria.
